Recently I was driving by the Shepherds of Good Hope in Ottawa’s Lowertown. They have a sign outside with messages – one side in English and the other in French. This day the sign said “do not forget to be happy.”
I thought that was such a great reminder. Happiness is a choice, and in yoga, it’s actually a discipline – contentment (santosha) – it’s not the result of external circumstances as we lead ourselves to believe. Happiness is a practice. So remember to be happy – it’s your choice. As the holidays approach and we spend money trying to buy a feeling, remember that no matter what your circumstances, you have an option to be happy in the moment. When you choose to feel happy, believing that happiness is yours not as a result of good actions or belongings but because you choose it, you may feel more satisfied with what you have and a sense of abundance and generosity may prevail.
